Art Deco Library

Level of Detail: Medium to High

Project Overview

The Art Deco Library was designed for the client of the Art Deco Garage, and was to serve as a “sister structure” to the original Art Deco Garage theme. The clients had wanted a custom library for some time, and after seeing the successful design ideas incorporated in the garage, they wanted to see what those ideas would translate in to for a library space. The result was a massive, two story space with real roots going back to the 1930s Art Deco Movement. Every detail right down to the table lamps draws its design roots from that era. The user enters the room through a massive set of 12 foot high doors, or smaller 8 foot high wing doors. Within the center of the space, the user sees a large fountain within a sunken space surrounded by marble steps. The interior of the sunken space contains a marble floor with a large compass rose consisting of inlaid bronze, brass and patina copper. Should one look up from the sunken space, they would see the second level topped with a full sized golden dome. Surrounding the sunken space are airstream styled columns with antique bronze bases, and neon lighting at the top. On either side of the main doors are massive floor to ceiling bookcases, outfitted with geometric stainglass sliding doors. On one side of the library, the user can relax on custom leather couches, or chose to sit at large, bronze inlaid tables. The entire wall consists of floor to ceiling windows with gold lattice metal work. The other side of the library contains a split level staircase, flanked by smaller arched bookshelves. At the top of the first staircase, one sees the floor to ceiling stainglass window flanked by custom sconce lighting – lighting that can be found throughout the library. At the top of the second run of stairs, one can see the custom metal railing with curved glass inserts, with each post topped with an art deco industrial light fixture. The upper floor is surrounded on three sides by floor to ceiling bookshelves. One can also look down to the first floor reading area from the mezzanine space opposite of the center rotunda. The lighting throughout the space was carefully designed to be true to art deco styles. The large lamp over the couches, the sconce lights, small round light, and medium sized rectangular lights all find their design themes from various structures throughout the Art Deco Era. Sadly, it was decided that this space could not be constructed due to lack of funds, and has been shelved for possible future consideration.
