Brick Library
Level of Detail: High
Project Overview
The goal of this project was to create a warm, intimate library space centered around a large dome, with a grand fireplace at one end, and a piano room on the other. The client liked a few design features seen in other projects, so one will notice the trussing from the 1940s themed garage, and the doorways from the Art Deco Library. Therefore, in order to tie these elements together, I decided to use a combination of used brick, wood, aged copper and an element of industrial design in some of the vertical members throughout the space. The large steel, vertical members were designed (in this project) to be the main load bearing structures for the space, with load bearing walls at either end of the main library. In between each column are large wooden bookshelves that rise from floor to ceiling whose verticality is further accentuated by the sunken reading area at the center of the library. The entire floor of the library consists of hardwood floors, with 3 stone steps that take you to the sunken reading room, where hardwood floors once again line the space. Within the sunken space, there is a wide assortment of seating options for the user (or users) of the space to chose from, including large couches in from of the oversized fireplace. The fireplace uses a combination of old world and modern design elements. For instance, the chimney stack is constructed of stone and brick with arched storage areas for wood. The shelving is constructed of cherry wood, however, these shelves are supported by modern, stainless steel and brass columns. The fire pit is protected by a custom glass and steel screen that mimics the other end of the library, an area of the structure that houses the clientÕs baby grand piano. This space was to be left open to nature, and area where one could sit, relax, play the piano, or read a book by natural, unfettered daylight. Here, the user has a 180 degree view of the grounds surrounding the library, and has the feeling of being outside on the terrace, while remaining comfortably indoors. The piano room and library are separated by a large archway, and is further separated by floor style. Whereas the library has hardwood floors, the piano room consists of a marble floor, with an inlaid compass rose design, accented with gold rings. Furthermore, to access this space, one most cross an old map of the world inlaid at the entrance way of the piano room. This project is currently under review, I hope to hear of a decision to go forth with this project soon.
