French Country and European Inspired Traditional Kitchen Design

Level of Detail: High

Project Overview

This project was a rather unique one, as it has been designed for my wife. For the longest time, she has wanted a French Country style kitchen, so, as a promotional project, I decided to create one for her. I also decided to add some old world European design into this project as well, to give the space a grander feel. The kitchen portion of this project is laid out like a typical kitchen; however, every effort was made to hide the utilitarian functionality of the kitchen. For instance, the refrigerator is a Sub-Zero upright, with the freezer on the left and refrigerator on the right. Instead of a stainless steel front, the doors are hidden by wood panels that mimic the intricacy of the walls and smaller cabinet doors. The range is based on an actual professional grade range, enhanced with custom hardware that matches the door handles and cabinet pulls. The sink is an under mounted, porcelain farm style sink that is center below a large arched window that is border with a bronze vine design. The vine design is carried through to the double doors leading to the dining room and pantry. The island also has some unique features; it contains a pot sink, lighted cabinets underneath the butcher block surface, and is designed to look like it is resting on bun feet, concealing the actual base that contains the plumbing and electric. The ceiling is rather unique as well, as it consists of a large faux dome painted to mimic the sky, and fresco reproductions of the "Divine Spark" mural. The floor in the kitchen is slate tile, which transitions into black and white tile in the breakfast nook, and hard wood floors in the dining area. The nook has a much more airy feeling to it, with its large floor to ceiling windows, and small dome in the roof. The flooring consists of small, black and white hexagon shaped ceramic tiles that gives the nook its own sense of identity. The dining room is designed around a formal European theme, with base and crown molding, and coffered ceiling. The walls of the dining area also have molding frames, in which one can see a lightly painted floral pattern. The entire room is over sized, again added to the grand feel of the space. The four foot fireplace is surrounded with an ornate, six foot high mantle. Over the mantle is a large custom mirror that helps reflect light throughout the space. Lighting throughout the dining area consists primarily of period style fixtures, with some modern lighting found in the kitchen. Overall, the space stays true to the French and European designs it was modeled after, and the client was very happy with the final result.
