Modern Office

Level of Detail: High

Project Overview

This project was a conceptual project. The client wanted some ideas for use in future construction of an office space. The client did not want an everyday, run-of-the-mill space, and instead wanted something that was earthy, and open to nature, and provided a tranquil working environment. The result was a space using earthtones, soft lighting, and large windows to allow as much natural light in as possible. The large curved wall in the reception area is the first focal point of this structure. Modern furniture, warm lighting and large windows add to the openness and warmth of the space. Around the corner from reception is simple break area, and it is in the space the second focal point can be found – a wall consisting curved blocks that goes through to the second floor. Above the break area is the first office – a loft style space with open views to nature, as well as open views to the reception area, and office on the other side of the double height space. This area can be accessed by the staircase that is found next to the break room. The stairs rise to the second floor and opens to a small hallway in which the user can access the loft office, or make there way around the perimeter walk to either of the other offices on that level. From there, the user can exit the office via a second floor balcony that can be accessed from a glass door at the end of the second floor hallway. The entire office is centered around a large reflecting pool which can be crossed one of two ways. The first is on the first floor. The user can move through a space I call the “water walk” – a pathway where the walls consist of ledgstone and moving water. The water flows from overhead nozzles that are in line with the stone walls. Large window openings in the walls give the user views to the pool, as well as surrounding nature. The second path across is above the water walk – an open air path way that will take the user to the other office structure, just as the floor level path does. That structure is a large conference space – designed to be open to nature and the reflecting pool, while keeping the users isolated from the distractions going on the main part of the office. Here, one will find large windows, and an outdoor staircase to the roof deck above the conference room. The lighting deign for this space is also unique, as no florescent lighting is used anywhere. All of the interior lighting is soft light, either recessed, hanging, table lamps, or floor lamps. The exterior illumination is more of an art installation as well as a means of lighting. The same type of light is used throughout the outdoor spaces, and is placed in areas that highlight the building strong vertical and horizontal features. The exterior of the building is clad in sandstone tile and ledgestone accents. The overall effect is a unique space for daily office life.
