Orient Themed Garage

Level of Detail: Medium to High

Project Overview

This garage was designed for a client that wanted an oriental style, earth toned themed garage. The designer and I started by choosing a muted, deep jade paint scheme on the upper portion of the walls. We then added wainscoting to the lower portion of the walls, separated by a stainless steel chair rail. We then blocked out the 3 existing windows with a unique geometric space with a large brass/bronze disc in the middle that mimics a gong. This theme was repeated throughout the space with some variation. The columns between the garage doors, and soffits along the ceiling were adorned with this same shape. The soffits also serve as the primary air handling structures for the space. In order to create a sense of serenity, we designed a wall fountain with hammered copper ribbing, brass backing at the back of the fountain, and glass between the ribs. The verticality is broken up with large rectangular pieces of slate randomly placed along the front of the fountain. The base of the fountain is broken up into an upper and lower section, connected with three scuppers that distribute water from the upper portion to the lower portion. The fountain base contains smooth river stones, and is lit from above and below. The fountain is flanked by large planters containing hyacinth, bamboo, small palms and grasses. The wall opposite of the window wall contains the clients modern and Asian art collection. Within the garage, there is a small seating area with bucket style seats and a flip down, flat screen television. The garage doors are coated with a vinyl graphic to mimic the slate found in the fountain, and around the soffits, as well as in the columns between the doors. The area above the doors is lit with small LED lights that are tucked into a pewter finish grate system that hides the doors when they are rolled up. The floor is finished in an epoxy bronze, and all doors are finished in a bronze laminate. The end result is a tranquil space, perfect for vehicle storage and a relaxing area to hang out.
